Valley native wins silver medal at world event


McAllen athlete Shaine Casas places second at the Mare Nostrum International Swim Meet for Team USA. This past week he won the Silver medal for the Men’s 100 back stroke final. The Valley swimmer was the ‘only athlete to come back sub-28.’ His time was 54.69 seconds. This puts Casas on track for qualifying for the Olympics later on.

Shaine Casas, Team USA 18U, “Where I’m from this doesn’t happen quite often, so it feels really good to be the first one to do it in a while.”

Casas is a graduate of McAllen High School and is attending Texas A&M University.
