University President is 2019 Border Texan of the Year


MCALLEN, Texas – The city of McAllen announces the 2019 Border Texan of the Year. This year’s honor goes to UTRGV President Dr. Guy Bailey. The University president was recognized for his outstanding work across the valley. The award highlights the accomplishment of those who help pave the way for opportunities in the region. Dr. Bailey was the first to launch a school of medicine at UTRGV.

Dr. Guy Bailey, 2019 Border Texan of the Year, ”We first tried to get a medical school here in 1949, that’s way before I was even born. For a long time people worked to get a medical school here. That will transform health care in the Valley it’ll provide more physicians, more specialties and truly will be a remarkable thing and as we add other health care programs, you’ll see the impact on the Valley will be enormous.”

The Border Texan Committee will host a banquet on November 21st at the McAllen Convention Center recognizing Dr. Bailey. Officials say the proceeds will go to local non-profit organizations.
