RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – Texas was number 1 in the nation to offer free legal help to its veterans last year, according to a recent report by the Legal Services Corporation.
Ceremonies across the state today honored Texas Veterans and those currently serving.
The Texas Access to Justice Foundation is dedicating the rest of this week to raising awareness about legal aid services for veterans.
The legislature set aside six million dollars to fund civil legal aid services this legislative session.
“As we see veterans returning from war from Iraq, we have seen a rise in demand and we have Texas lawyers ready and willing to help veterans with civil legal needs, including family law matters, housing consumer and actually sometimes having to deal with the veterans administration to make sure they get the benefits to which they’re entitled,” Said Betty Balli Torres of the Texas Access to Justice Foundation.
There are legal aid events across the state this week. There is also a free live chat option on TexasLawHelp.org in addition to a hotline at 1-800-622-2520.
