RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – “Really all the resources somebody needed around housing and affordable housing were under this roof,” said Josue Ramirez, coordinator for the Community Development Corporation of Brownsville(CDCB) Mi Casita program.
Over the weekend in Weslaco, the CDCB, in collaboration with other RGV housing providers, held Somos Vecinos, an inaugural housing fair to offer information to the community about homeownership.
“It was really open for anybody to come and get information around financing, around the house, around construction, but it was a collaborative effort.”
Eva Maria Castillo attended as a volunteer for ARISE, a local organization working to strengthen colonias, but also learned that she could apply for buyer’s assistance to upgrade her home for her family.
“I’m a single mom and I have four kids and I have one bedroom. I learned that I can still make an application and they can still help me out. So it was really interesting because I thought I couldn’t,” said Eva Maria Castillo, an Arise Volunteer.
She says she’ll be filling out an application right away and plans to share with others in similar situations that help is available.
“Yes, and I know a lot of people that really need help so I’m going to spread the word to other people.”
More than 100 people made it to the event and Ramirez says the CDCB is grateful for the opportunity to help better the lives of the RGV community.
“We’d just like to thank our collaborators our sponsors for helping us get this information out to the rural communities of the Rio Grande Valley that desperately need affordable housing.”
