SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas — It’s the first day of summer and the 40th anniversary of Schlitterbahn. What better way to kick off the season on South Padre Island.
Mike Bigelow, Director of Marketing, “We’ve been a big part of the community here on South Padre Island. We’re celebrating our 18th birthday, so we’re kind of like adults now and one of the largest employers in the island, the largest entertainment value anywhere here in the Valley. It’s a lot of fun for everybody.” Schlitterbahn began in 1979 in New Braunfels. In 2001 a waterpark opened in south padre island with a resort and indoor water park opening in 2011. Last week, the Ohio-based Cedar Fair Entertainment Company purchased the company’s New Braunfels resort and park and Galveston park. The rights to the Schlitterbahn name was also acquired.
