Scammers using fire department name in attempt to collect funds

MGN Online

HARLINGEN, Texas – The city of Harlingen is asking residents to be on alert. Scammers claiming to be with the Harlingen Fire Department are asking for monetary donations to help residents affected by the June 24 flooding.

Be advised that the Harlingen Fire Department is NOT collecting money for flood victims.

The calls are from a local number.  The City encourages anyone who gets a call from these unscrupulous individuals to not fall for their scam.

Harlingen Fire Chief, Roy Rubio says it’s a shame that there are individuals who try to take advantage of people’s generosity in times of emergencies.  He encourages anyone who gets such a call to hang up and report it to the Harlingen Police non-emergency number (956) 216-5940.

As a reminder, FEMA does not charge for their services either so if someone comes by your home claiming they will inspect your home for a price say no and call the police.

Once again, the Harlingen Fire Department is not collecting money to help flood victims so don’t fall for this scam.
