Rio Grande Valley boxer ranks high in four national divisions


DONNA, Texas – A small gym in Donna continues to succeed in the world of Boxing. This month, Team Bocanegra took only one boxer to the Eastern Elite Qualifier in Columbus Ohio. Their result is one gold for the Rio Grande Valley.

Ranulfo “El Rayito” Bocanegra is 13-years-old. He’s acquired 13 national titles and is currently ranked among the top five boxers across four divisions. Local 23 News followed up with team Bocanegra as they continue to make a name for themselves as top contenders nationwide.

Coach Bocanegra, “All our kids here are nationally ranked in the top 5. So we’re doing something good here. From number one to the top 5.

With this victory the young boxer is one step closer to becoming an elite boxer.

Ranulfo Bocanegra Jr., “I could go to the Olympics in 2024 and I want to be a world champion and becoming pro at the age of 19.

Coach Bocanegra says the team is planning their first international fights in November. For now the young boxer continues to train hard, persevere and prepare to take more national titles.

Coach Bocanegra, “Thanks to everybody that supports our team. We’re going to keep working hard to bring the national titles to the Valley.

Along with the boxer’s accomplishments, Team Bocanegra’s head coach was recently nominated as the 2019 Amateur Head Coach in the RGV Boxing Hall of Fame.
