RGV-MPO to consider monorail proposal

AUSTIN, Texas — One of the topics under discussion for the newly formed Rio Grande Valley-Metropolitan Planning Organization (RGV-MPO) is the construction of a regional monorail.

On Friday, June 21, Governor Abbot will provide the final signature for the document, merging three metropolitan planning organizations in the Rio Grande Valley. That means the region now has the 5th largest transportation planning agency in the state.

Local 23 News is the only valley news team to meet with legislators in Austin to talk about future projects like the proposed monorail.

Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez, City of Pharr, “As board members we are able to add or subtract projects. That’s one of the projects we’ll be looking to see if it’s of interest to the entire region. We would love to have it north to south, meaning, San Antonio, Houston. Also, we would like to go east and west. To the island, Starr County.”

With the new merger, the Valley can tap into more state and federal funds for the construction of roads, bridges, and highways.
