Remembering lives lost 30 years later


ALTON, Texas – Saturday, Sept. 21 will mark the 30-year anniversary of a fatal bus accident that claimed the lives of 21 Mission CISD students.

Today a ceremony was held at the Alton Memorial Junior High School to remember and celebrate the lives of the students killed in that accident on September 21, 1989. The school was named in honor of those 21 students. Several guest speakers including former employees with the district during the time of the accident telling stories to students about the tragedy, and how the community rallied together.

Sylvia Garcia, Principal – Alton Memorial Jr. High School, “United in a united effort to go through this tragedy. I think it’s very important to teach our students the importance of community and of helping each other and loving each other.”

Many family members of those victims were in attendance and were given rocks where they could write messages to their lost loved ones. Those rocks were then place outside under 21 trees which were planted years ago in memory of those students.
