Red Cross in dire need of volunteers

WESLACO, Texas — The American Red Cross are in dire need of volunteers. The organization started preparing to deliver relief to the Rio Grande Valley before the storms arrived. Their role is simple one; to make sure residents have a safe place to stay, meals and emotional support.

Ekland Durousseau, Red Cross Regional Communications Manager, “We have volunteers who are out in the community delivering relief supplies. Clean up kits, hygiene kits with toothpaste, soap. Those things you really don’t think about until you need them.”

Since the flooding began the Red Cross has housed more than 100 residents, delivered more than 27,000 meals, and distributed more than 5,000 cleaning kits. But with just 150 volunteers to cover a three-county area, officials say there are in need of volunteers especially spanish speaking.

“We have an expanded kitchen, so we need help in the kitchen. Anyone who can do data entry, if you’re comfortable with technology, we have some tasks for you. If you like to organize, we definitely need you in our warehouse.” Says Durousseau.

Volunteers like Ruby Nunez say if you have time the organization would love to have you come and lend a helping hand.

“This is the Rio Grande Valley. It is a huge area and there’s a lot of people out there that need our help. These are our neighbors, these are our friends, these are our family members. It’s our community that’s affected and we need the help and all the support that we can get.”

If you would like to help you can visit https://www.redcross.org/ or you can also sign up in person at Weslaco High School on Wednesday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
