PHARR, Texas – The city of Pharr is kicking off produce season at the largest land port in the nation. This morning importers and distributors gathered at the Pharr International Bridge to celebrate the anticipation of a good harvest in the upcoming months.

More than 60 percent of all fresh produce coming from Mexico crosses through the Pharr Bridge. In the past years it has created over 5,000 jobs.

Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez, “Every year this bridge has grown by $1 billion a year. When I started we were at $30 billion in commerce, we are now over $35 billion and climbing every year showing growth. Showing the well organization that’s been placed here.”

Officials say tax revenue is not only for the federal government, but also for the county, stating funds are invested in projects important to residents.
