New housing projects coming to Brownsville


BROWNSVILLE, Texas – New housing projects are in the works for the city of Brownsville.

This morning the local housing authority breaking ground for the creation of a development unit. A 9 percent $20 million tax break was awarded to the city agency for the creation of 150 housing units.

The project is known as the Poinsettia Gardens at Boca Chica. It will consist of one the largest financial awards the Brownsville Housing Authority has received for this type of project.

Zuleika Morales Romero, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, “It’s going to transform the entire community. Housing is the first step to transforming the neighborhood itself. You’re bringing in the new apartments, they’re going to embellish the area and it’s going to transcend into the rest of the neighborhood as well.”

This afternoon the housing authority also celebrating the creation of a second housing development near downtown on west Jefferson Street.
