MCALLEN, Texas – A McAllen family wins top honors for the most unusual item collected during keep McAllen’s Beautiful Organization’s Annual Great American Cleanup.

Alicia Gutierrez and her family were participating in the annual cleanup event when they ran across a mermaid poster cardboard cutout, most likely used at a party.

To add some fun to the annual event, organizers created a small contest for participants. Apart from bragging rights the family won a couple of small prizes for their efforts.

“We saw this large piece of cardboard we’re like we got to pick it up. We are going to have to take it to the cleanup area and when we opened it up it was little mermaids,” says Alicia Gutierrez, the most unusual item winner.

Gutierrez and her family not only won locally, but also the statewide competition.

Last year’s winner found a set of dentures.
