BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Friday, Dr. Sylvia Atkinson was in federal court for allegations of a movie-for-money bribery scheme.
The delay is because the case is too complex and the number of witnesses is just too much for there to be a fair trial, according to Federal Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr.
Atkinson is accused of accepting a $10,000 bribe from an undercover agent, the deal was to allow a movie to be filmed on BISD property.
“I think it’s pretty much the sentiment of the board, we want to be able to promote the district as much as possible and if there is an opportunity to do so and it’s a feel-good story and you know, it’s about promoting the district and our community, I’m all for it, sign them up, give me 10 filmmakers, thank you,” said Atkinson at the February 12th board meeting.
The case is being pushed back to April 6th, meanwhile, Atkinson still serves as board vice president. She has abstained from anything to do with BISD relations.
