Mercedes Police remove voters ahead of a contentious city council meeting

MERCEDES, Texas – A Mercedes City Commission meeting that would possibly lead to the censure and removal of Commissioner Leonel Benavidez broke out in chaos as several citizens were removed.

Police were already on the scene. Barring entry to many residents and members of the media when Velda Garcia, along with another woman and a man were physically removed from the meeting.

After the meeting had convened resident Dalia Peña left, and then attempted to regain entry to retrieve her purse but was barred from re-entry and eventually handcuffed and removed as well.

A facebook page, Mercedes Will Drain Again, shares a livestream of what happened before the meeting and throughout. (Local 23 has not edited out strong language in the livestream)

Local 23 is working with sources that were at the meeting and will have further details as they become available.
