McAllen International Airport granted $16 million in funding


MCALLEN, Texas – The office of U.S. Congressman Vicente Gonzalez says more than $16 million have been granted to the McAllen International Airport.

The two grants are part of the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Programs. The two grants total more than $16.6 million. They address drainage for runways as well as technology upgrades for new equipment to enhance communications with airplanes.

Mayor Jim Darling, City of McAllen, “It’s exciting, I think it increases the capacity for what we can do. It also increases passenger safety and just the general condition of the airport.”

The mayor adds that the airport sees 47 percent of all air traffic through the Rio Grande Valley and with the growth the airport has seen taking care of the infrastructure is vital.
