Local nonprofit hosts back to school outreach

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The Community Development Corporation of Brownsville is a private nonprofit community housing development organization. It seeks to provide safe, sanitary, and affordable housing to the residents of Cameron and Willacy Counties. With school starting soon they are kicking it off with a block party.

“We decided to host this event to take it back to the community since we always get good. I’ll put from them this is a good way to give them a little bit back,” says Karian Saucedo.

This will be a free event with resources, refreshments, food and school supplies for the upcoming academic year.

“I think it’s very unique for the community of Brownsville. I don’t think we’ve ever seen something like this, a block party on the street. So, I think it’s very unique and we have a good turn out right now so that’s great,” says Andres Guerra.

This is the first time that the Community Development Organization of Brownsville has had an event like this and considering the success of this, it likely won’t be the last.

“I think it’s important because here in Brownsville, as you can see, we have a line going all the way around H-E-B and so you see the need of people coming to get free school supplies which is a great way to give them a little bit back,” says Saucedo.

“People should be a part of events like this because we have 50 different organizations here to provide and give more information so it’s really coming together and getting to know the various organizations that we have in the community and really showing that Brownsville is a close knight community,” concluded Guerra.
