Weslaco ISD Replaces Flood Damaged Buses, Two Schools Closed For School Year

WESLACO, Texas - Weslaco ISD fulfills their promise to replace damaged school buses before the first day of class.

Heavy rains devastated many parts of the mid-valley region this June, prompting millions of dollars in repairs and damaging 63 of the school district's buses.

The district told KVEO the last of the new buses was received by August 17. Weslaco ISD is also home to the only campus temporarily closed for flood related reasons. Franklin D. Roosevelt Elementary will remain closed for the 2018-2019 school year.

Dr. Priscilla Canales, Superintendent, "We're not going to be able to open the school year at the campus. Likely we'll have the students and staff at other campuses all year long."

Approximately 548 elementary students will attend Airport and Ybarra Elementary schools for the remainder of the academic year. School officials are assessing repairs and the future of Roosevelt Elementary.
