WESLACO, Texas – Today Weslaco ISD met with the Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Department to investigate a case of the mumps at the school district. Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Department and Weslaco ISD are confirming a case of mumps that has been identified by an individual from Weslaco East High School. Due to HIPPA laws which protect patient privacy, we cannot provide any further information about the individual. During the investigation, it was determined this individual had limited exposure to others.
Weslaco ISD is following all Center of Disease Control (CDC) and Texas Department of State Health Services protocols in investigating this case and limiting others to exposure. We are working closely with the Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Department to ensure that if anyone exhibits signs and symptoms of mumps, he/she follows up with a doctor for assessment. To ensure the safety of students and staff, communication will be made with anyone who may have been in contact with this individual and we will continue to investigate in accordance with CDC and Texas Department of State Health Services protocols.
Hidalgo County and Weslaco ISD have a high vaccination rate and there are no other cases of mumps at WISD to report. Hidalgo County Health Department has stated that the recent cases of mumps in the county have no link to the current immigration situation along the border.
