Weslaco Family Mourns Loss Of Three Killed In Michigan Crash

Local News

Relatives of the Herrera family, the family involved in the fatal Lansing crash, have spoken up about their emotional distress over the tragic loss. “Since they told me, I can’t sleep. I can’t eat anything because it’s really sad for me to be without them.” Says Juanita Herrera.

Ovido and Juanita Herrera sit together looking at pictures of their former daughter in law, Gardenia, and two grand daughters, Caitlyn and Evelyn, during happier times. The two agreed to sit down to talk about their tragic loss.

“For me it was real hard. When I heard the news they called me and told me that my granddaughter had died. There is nothing that can make me feel better.” Juanita continues.

The family tells us that the mother, Gardenia, and her family had just moved from Weslaco three months ago to Indiana. They were in pursuit of a better life and were visiting Lansing Michigan, where the accident occurred. “She was a good woman. She suffered. A hard worker and she always fought for what she had.” Says Ovido Herrera.

The family says Caitlyn was just 11-years-old and her younger sister, Evelyn was 10. “She just started living, she just started living. I don’t know why my God did that to me.” Cries Juanita.

Ovido Herrera now calls Gardenia and Caitlyn his little angels and hopes they are in a better place. He says he will always remember them fondly. “They will always be remembered because you can never forget. They may leave, but they will always be inside of us. In me.” Proclaimed Ovido.

The Herrera family also tells us that their other 10-year-old granddaughter, Evelyn, is still in a coma. They are hopeful because she has made some progress.

They say the five year old boy, who was Caitlyn and Evelyn’s brother, is conscious, awake, and speaking, but is asking for his mother.
