Making healthy choices has never been easier for some employees in south Texas. We tell you about a new initiative that’s rewarding people with some extra cash just for getting physically active.
MOTION is a new initiative from United Health Care that works with big and small businesses, giving employees free fitness trackers. Other than counting the steps employees take per day, these devices are helping them get money at the same time. All they have to do is hit their fitness goals for the day, and they can make up to three dollars per day.
Rudy Martinez, AD Technology employee, “You get a dollar per task. If you complete all the tasks, three dollars per day. Seven days a week, that’s $21, add it up to a month, and you have a good chunk of change.”
The purpose of this program is to motivate employees to live healthier lifestyles, and at the same time bring down healthcare costs for employers. At AD Technology, 95% of its employees have gotten involved with the program, including the general manager.
Gerardo Portales, AD Technology General Manager, “It motivates our people. One of the things that I have, is that I like to lead by example. Nobody is giving money away for free, so it motivates the people, it motivates me, and it helps us keep ourselves healthier.”
Employees receive a check every month, and can get over $1,000 per year if they hit the number of steps they’re supposed to everyday, even on their days off.
Rudy Martinez, “You just work out. Who doesn’t like to walk around? Who doesn’t go to the mall. Who doesn’t go to the beach? It benefits us, and it is free money. They’re not charging you. Overall it’s a must for all companies to have this type of insurance and push everybody to stay healthy.”
So far this year in Texas, United Healthcare has reimbursed participating members more than $600,000.
