Valley City Racks Up Two Big Recognitions

The awards and accolades for the city of McAllen continue to stack up. This time the city has been recognized for its low unemployment rate and community pride.

Phyllis and Thomas Violett are longtime residents of McAllen. They say they wouldn’t trade life in McAllen for any other place in the world. It’s a testament to one of McAllen’s latest accolades being ranked 8th in the U.S. for community pride. KVEO wants to know what the city’s recipe for success is and headed to city hall.

Roy Rodriguez, McAllen City Manager says, “The citizens are happy. They are satisfied with the wherewithal we have the projects the parks.”

Rodriguez says part of that ranking has to do with the city’s safety. Calling McAllen one of the safest places in the U.S. and attributes the ranking to keeping the people happy.

“The demand is high but our services are too. Our level of services are always exceeding expectations.”

McAllen also received more good news when the latest job numbers were released touting McAllen as the lowest ranking of unemployment in the Rio Grande Valley. Rodriguez says that can be attributed to the cities relationship with contractors and developers that makes projects speedy and successful.  

“The economy certainly looks like it has been rebounding on the retail sector side, construction has been booming for several years. It looks like everything is sort of starting to click a little better.”

Jim Violett says it’s about the people and one other special ingredient.  

“I like the folks down here. They are very friendly it’s easy to get along with. We like working with a lot of people down here. We volunteer a lot at hospitals and things like that. It makes it really nice to get to know people and the restaurants are great.”
According to the latest job numbers the entire South Texas border region from Hidalgo County to Webb County showed a decrease in unemployment numbers.
