It’s the second day back for UTRGV’s Chess Team after they came in 2nd place in the national tournament in New York City.
“We are best in Texas so, I am very proud of my students,” Coach Bartek said.
Holden Hernandez, Carlos Hevia, Anton Kovalyov and Andrey Stukopin came close to being the best in the country, shying just one point away from claiming the national champion title.
They claimed victory over Texas Tech and Columbia, but scored a 7.5 against the 8.5 from four year national champion holder, Webster University.
The team is done competing for the academic year, however, they will continue to prepare for next year and be a part of practice competitions. The next one will be hosted in Chicago next month.
