UTRGV Mariachi takes first place in longest running music festival in Texas

A mariachi from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is one of the tops in the nation. Mariachi Juvenil Aztlan taking first place in the recent Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza in San Antonio. It’s the largest and longest-running music festival in Texas.

UTRGV has two mariachi ensembles. Both were invited to perform with the internationally renown Mariachi Vargas. More than a thousand mariachi students from across the country participated in the conference.
