Upper Valley Hospital Now Level 2 Trauma Care Center

Local News

The Upper Valley now has more resources in delivering critical care. Including an operating room with board certified trauma surgeons available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

McAllen Medical Center, part of the South Texas Health System, announcing they have become the first and only Level 2 Trauma Center in the upper Valley.

Dr. John Hovorka, Trauma Medical Director, “The most important thing for the patients is that we have an operating room immediately available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”

The hospital received the distinction from the state after the completion of a rigorous program verification by the American College of Surgeons, requiring the hospital to achieve essential standards of trauma care bringing a higher level of critical care to the upper valley.

“Once we become Level 2, 95 percent of the injured patients we care for are care for here in the valley.” says Dr. Hovorka.

Hospital officials also adding the Level 2 designation strengthens the RGV Regional Trauma System but they do not plan on stopping there.  They hope to also become Hidalgo County’s first and only Level 1 Trauma Center.

Dr. Hovorka adds, “The hardest part is to get from Level 3 to Level 2 and were most of the way there and with their support we can support the Valley and the residents that we serve.”

The state certification of the Level 2 Trauma Center is valid for a 3-year period and expires in February 2022.
