UPDATE: Neighbor dispute leads to fatal shooting

A dispute among neighbors in Brownsville turns into a deadly shooting overnight.

Brownsville Police responded to the call around 1:06 in the morning about three men arguing outside the apartment complex located at the 1700 block of West Elizabeth Street. When police arrived two men, identified as 22 year-old Jesus Diaz and 24 year-old Steve Dorsett had been shot and were immediately transported to the hospital where Dorset died and Diaz remains with non-life threatening injuries.

39 year-old Raul Valentin Canales is in custody in connection to the shooting and is awaiting arraignment on one count of murder and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Detective Mellissa Gonzalez with the Brownsville Police Department said, “There were comments made that they were arguing, that there was arguing going on and then when we got to the scene we found somebody shot. Of the two males that were shot, one of them was shot in the foot and he sustained non-life threatening injuries and the other one was shot in the arm and that was the someone that was pronounced dead at the hospital.”

Brownsville Police say they continue to investigate while Canales awaits arraignment. We’ll keep you updated as more details become available.
