BROWNSVILLE, Texas – UPDATE: U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar says the child will be reunited with family in New York by the end of the week.

A 3-year-old boy crying and in distress was found abandoned in a cornfield near Brownsville Tuesday morning.

The toddler is believed to be abandoned by human smugglers and was identified only by his name and phone number that were written on his shoes, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials.

Border patrol agents say as they attempted to reach his parents using the number on his shoe, the small boy was entertained watching a movie.

RGV Sector Chief Patrol Agent Rodolfo Karisch says he believes the boy was with a larger group of migrants who ran away after agents approached them, leaving him behind.

So far, authorities have not been able to contact any relatives and are in the process of transferring the 3-year-old to the care of Health and Human Services.
