TxDOT says Bridge Construction to End By Late 2017

Local News

‘The Rio Hondo Bridge rehabilitation is ahead of schedule.’
That is what the Texas Department of Transportation tells us.

Late last year, the only functioning lift bridge in Texas closed for electrical system upgrades.
The project once estimated for 33 months of rehabilitation is now expecting completion by the end of 2017.

TxDOT Spokesperson Octavio Saenz tells us, “currently we’re working on the west side of the bridge doing some retrofitting, working on just the mechanics of it, [and] ensuring that it continues to be a lift bridge. We hope to have it open again by the end of this year.”

In the meantime, Rio Hondo residents must continue to use alternate routes to get around the city.

The last time improvements of any kind occurred on this bridge were back in 2001.
