Thousands of books donated to Pre-k and Kinder students

Local News

HARLINGEN, Texas – Harlingen CISD is distributing around 4,000 books to their Pre-k and Kindergarten students to encourage reading.

The books were donated by the United Way through a grant they received from First Book; a non-profit dedicated to enhancing literacy programs in the community. This book giveaway focuses on Pre-k and Kinder students as they are in the early stages of learning how to read.

Kathy Preddy, United Way Resources Development Director, “The outreach is so important to get these books in the hands of children at an early age. By showing the example of reading in a home, we hope that encourages them to continue reading.”

Dr. Art Cavazos, Harlingen CISD Superintendent, “We believe that if you start strong, you’re going to finish strong. We are highly promoting the importance of reading and reading early.”

All Pre-k and Kinder students can keep the books and take them home. The books will be distributed to students before Christmas to enjoy over the holiday break with their families.
