HARLINGEN, Texas – Hospitals, many times, are seen as scary places for children. Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen is making the experience more comforting.
Therapeutic Play is a pediatric treatment to ease children’s fears and anxieties of hospitals. A Child Life Specialist at the hospital says the playrooms are meant to motivate kids to get out of their beds. Children of all ages, with illnesses ranging from broken bones to infections, can benefit from these playrooms.
Sara Robertson, Child Life Specialist with Valley Baptist Medical Center said, “Play actually promotes healing. It gives kids a chance to just to be kids even in the mist of dealing with an illness. Having these playrooms provides that chance for our kids to process this experience. It may be something scary, it may be something they’ve never experienced before.”
Therapeutic Play also educates children about their medical procedures and helps them understand what they will be going through. Experts say the goal of Therapeutic Play is to help make hospitals a more inviting place for children.
