Theater Company Collecting Toys for Immigrant Children

Local News

The season of giving is officially here, and one group of women in McAllen is working on collecting toys for immigrant children coming into the respite center. We’ll show you how these women acquired their acting skills, not only to collect toys, but to send out a positive message this holiday season.

Frontera Liquida, has been using their spare time in the evenings to rehearse and prepare their Christmas play, “La Caja Misteriosa” or “The Mysterious Box.”

“We’re ready to start performing in front of an audience. I’m very excited and thankful for the work my colleagues have done.” said Edna Ochoa.

What many don’t know is that these women didn’t know each other or anything about acting before they were part of this play.

Connie Garza, “I didn’t know what to expect, but i knew we had a great leader, a great director. It took practice and it took commitment, and it took team work, and we were able to do it and accomplish it, and I’m really pleased with the outcome.”

Ivonne Bollain y Goytia, “I’ve liked it a lot. It’s helped me lose my fear of talking in front of a crowd.”

Among this group of women there’s a nurse, teacher, photographer, writer, and even the first ever female police officer in Mission. Despite having their full time jobs, these women made time out of their day to be part of this play, which has several purposes.

Laura Garcia, “The purpose of this play is to introduce our traditions to all the people, especially during this time of the year when we should all show love and be united. We’re also trying to collect toys for children.”

The toys collected by these women will be given to immigrant children coming in to the respite center in downtown McAllen later this month. In addition to collecting toys, these women will also use this play to bring the holiday spirit into several nursing homes across the RGV.
