Hundreds of athletes gathered in Brownsville for the annual Special Olympics.
Students from local middle schools and high schools participated in several competitive events. But a special education expert tells us it’s not just about fun and games.
Dr. Sandra Rodriguez, Special Education Director said, “It’s important to make sure that all kids are included in every event. We do this to make sure they get to compete just like everybody else does and regular sports. It helps them to enjoy the outdoors of course in this particular event but also to know what it is to be competing as well as the camaraderie.”
The Special Olympics has been celebrating people with disabilities for 50 years through the joy of sport and with more than 4.9 million athletes in 172 countries.
