Local News

Fishermen are heading to the Port Isabel and South Padre Island area for the first day of the 78th annual Texas International Fishing Tournament.

It’s one of the largest fishing events in the state and this year, some may even catch more than just fish.

It’s a tournament dedicated to quality family oriented fishing for anglers of all ages. From Wednesday, August 2nd to Sunday, August 6th. Both professional and amateur anglers alike will compete to be the best.

There are three categories: Bay, Tarpon and offshore. All ages are welcome, but the TIFT is not just about the catching of fish.

John Tippit, President of TIFT said, “We give back scholarships. This year we’re awarding 21  $ 2,000 scholarships to deserving young men and women.”

During the tournament, there are opportunities for lucky participants to receive scholarship money. Red fish are released into the bay. Registered tournament participants that catch one of these fish can win $10,000 in scholarship money for themselves, child, or grandchild. With such prizes on the line we asked for some tips.

John Tippit, “First thing you need to do is have a little bit of luck. Get your pole, get your boat, get your family and come on down.”

Weigh in’s get intense. In the evenings, the daily catches are compared. There’s even seating for

Tippit added, “Whether you think you’re a professional angler, or you are a professional angler, or you’re a little boy or girl that wants to go fish with their mom or grandparents, we offer something for everybody.”

KVEO spoke with a few anglers who do not want to reveal their favorite fishing spots. After all, it is the 78th annual TIFT. Richard Moore will be on site for the official weigh-ins. Registration is on August 2nd through August 3rd.
