Ten million drainage project underway in Hidalgo County

Local News

WESLACO, Texas – A $10-million dollar drainage project in now underway in Hidalgo County. County leaders say it is a critical project in helping to alleviate flood waters in Weslaco. The project will construct detention ponds for the Las Brisas and Chapa Subdivisions including the Onyx Drive neighborhoods. County leaders say these neighboorhoods were among the most impacted during the 2018 June floods. Funding for this project comes from the $190 million drainage bond approved by voters in November.

David Fuentes, Hidalgo County Commissioner PCT. 1, “What we are trying to do is create an alternative place for water to accumulate rather than in peoples streets and homes. We’re trying to remove it from the neighborhood, put is somewhere else so that it can continue to move down stream and out of our area.

This is just one of 37 drainage project the county is moving forward with.
