Teen May Have Been Killed Over Drug Theft

Local News

A Rio Grande City teen may have been killed over $67 worth of drugs.

That is some testimony as more character witnesses are called to testify in the case involving the death of 17-year-old Chayse Olivarez. A ruling will determine if two teens accused in relation to the murder will be tried as adults or juveniles.

Several witnesses went before a judge to see if the case will be moved from one court to another in Starr county. One witness claimed that the two teens planned the murder because Chayse allegedly stole less than $70 worth of drugs.

A Texas Ranger involved in the investigation said Olivarez was lured into an abandoned house. He was then shot and killed. He testified they then put the remains in two black plastic bags, but not before dismembering the body and burning it.

The judge is expected to make the ruling after the holidays. If the decision is made to move the case to adult court, the district attorney will then send it to a Grand jury.
