Special Olympics Bowling Athletes Have Sportsmanship ‘To Spare’

Local News

Practice makes perfect and for Special Olympic Bowlers, they have sportsmanship to spare.

Roughly 1,500 athletes showed off their skills in the Rio Grande Valley Bowling Competition at Creasey’s in Harlingen. Athletes from schools across the RGV earned Gold, Silver and Bronze medals.

But the coaches say, the sportsmanship and fun is what really matters.

Peter Leal, Edcouch-Elsa Special Olympics Coach said, “No matter what place they get, whether it’s a metal or ribbon, whatever participation they just bring it. They’re out here having fun. That’s what brings me out as an athlete.”

Athlete’s competed in 3 divisions. Bowlers 12 and up aimed to qualify for the statewide competition, which will be during the 2017 winter games in Austin next February.
