Spring break is said to have officially begun in South Padre Island.
Many college students from around the country are expected to gather at the beach community for weeks of celebration.
How are local businesses are preparing for the big season ahead?
Chief Sandcastle builder Andy Hancock says, “Spring break does more than introduce people to south padre. It makes sure we put Texas on the Map every year. In south padre we have the cleanest beaches in South Texas.”
“When you come here, you get a unique experience. You’ve got great music, great people, great city and a great beach,” says Hancock.
And it’s not all just fun and games, for the local community it means preparing for large sums of visitors well in advance.
Local business owner Jacki Sourjon says, “We make sure that we have the merchandise in the store, everything is fixed. Everything is ready. Everything is clean, we’re ready for the kids. We’re ready way before they came.”
We’re starting to see waves and waves of tourist slowly coming in. but this year we wonder. How prepared are the businesses in South Padre Island?
“You know, you always need to add something, fix something, you’re never going to be one hundred prepared,” says Sourjon.
Jacki says he’s done all he can do to prepare, but he is hoping that weather does not ruin his plans this season.
“About the weather, so far it is good. I hope it’s going to stay like that so the kids are going to be happy. They’ll be able to enjoy the beach and the businesses,” says Sourjon.
Along with large numbers of tourists, experts recommend caution while driving this spring break.
