The Texas Department of Public Safety is getting ready to send several hundred new troopers to the Rio Grande Valley. Under a plan set forward in Austin some 200 new officers are set to arrive to patrol the border by the end of August.
The number is expected to climb to 250 by December as required by the Border Security bill.
The director of the DPS says troopers along the border are needed to secure the state.
Steve McCraw, Texas DPS Director says, “If the border was secure we would be much more secure, not only into in our border cities, but in the cities throughout the state. This has had an impact in that area. It’s a different game right now.”
Many are questioning the price tag of nearly $900 million. Especially since many other areas of the state are unprotected. Regardless the state says we can see more troopers here by the end of August.
