Sentencing Hearing Begins for Valley Man Guilty of Killing Wife

Local News

Today Alvaro Mata Jr. had his sentencing hearing.

Last month, Mata Jr. plead guilty in the murder of his wife and mother of his children, Jessica Cortina.

In late 2017, their 17-year-old son called 9-1-1 Cortina came into his room bleeding from the chest.

Mata reportedly “told the boy to get out and he continued to shoot his wife”

He fled from their home in San Benito and was arrested and charged with first degree murder.

The pair had four children together, and according to Mata’s Attorney Orlando Jimenez, are the reason why he pled guilty.

Cortina was an elementary school teacher with the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District.

His sentencing hearing will continue tomorrow.
