Search for New Port Isabel Police Chief Underway, Current Chief to Stay

Local News

The City of Port Isabel continues searching for a new police chief. Chief Gualberto “Wally” Gonzalez announced his retirement on July 21st. According to the city, the offer to step up to the plate was handed to Laguna Vista Police Chief, Tony David. Chief David recently declined that offer.

For now, Chief Gonzalez will continue to uphold Chief duties until a suitable replacement is found.

“I respect whatever his reasons are and I will help the city of Port Isabel, they’ve been really good to me and when I told the city manager of my intentions about two months ago, they got it with really great respect towards me and they’ve honored me very well so I’ll help the city as much as I can.” Chief Gonzalez stated.

The new chief position with the Port Isabel Police Department will be taking on a $16,000 additional pay increase.
