The city of San Benito received $494,755 to create a new park.
The funds come from the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation park grant to promote healthy lifestyles and improve the quality of life.
It is planned to have up to 3 soccer fields, 2 softball fields, and many other amenities.
The park will be located on south Sam Houston, directly behind Fire Station number 1.
“It’s an open field,” says San Benito Parks Director Art Garza, “ They come and utilize it for just to practice and come out here. As soon as the park is completed they will have official fields they can actually use. It will be a park instead of open land… It’s been in the books since 2007-08. So again, it’s the first park south of the expressway that is city owned. We’re excited about getting it going already.”
Construction is set to begin in the upcoming months.
The park is expected for completion in 2018.
