SAN BENITO, Texas – A local elementary school is celebrating the launch of a new project. It’s aimed to better the fitness of their students and educate them on how to live a healthy lifestyle, but will this project make an impact in the long run?

Hula Hooping, jumping and push up’s; these are some of the ways students at Judge Oscar De La Fuente Elementary are working on their fitness. Students demonstrating exercises using the school’s new outdoor fitness center known as the “fit pit”.

“Project Fit America” aims to empower children and educate them on exercising and staying active.

Coach Mel Sosa, De La Fuente Elementary, “We’re so blessed to have this as a tool for our kids to use to build their upper body strength. Basically a motivational tool to keep them active, keep them moving.”

Project Fit America was funded by the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation to better students’ physical health. Studies have shown obesity is on the rise amongst children in the Rio Grande Valley. Coach Sosa wants to put an end to these unhealthy lifestyles. “We want to break that, take a stand against all that stuff and just provide the students with opportunities to move, to exercise, and just avoid that sedentary lifestyle that we’re so use to down here.”

The state-of-the-art fitness center provides students with games, activities, and physical challenges for students to participate in.

“They know this is not a playground, this is not monkey bars, these are workout stations.” says Coach Sosa.

Project Fit America experts say children who frequently participate in physical activity have higher academic success. This program not only improves the health but also the quality of life for kids in the Rio Grande Valley.

Oscar De La Fuente Elementary is one of 19 schools who received this grant by the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation to sponsor the Project Fit America Program.
