Rio Hondo Bridge Upgrades Begin

Local News

Construction begins on the Rio Hondo Bridge today.

The Texas Department of Transportation begins rehabilitation work of the only functioning lift bridge in the state.

The bridge will be closed for the next 8 months.

Approximately 6 thousand vehicles cross this bridge daily.

Those that frequent the bridge are asked to find alternate routes.

Texas Department of Transportation Public Information Officer Octavio Saenz says, “The last rehabilitation was done on the Rio Hondo bridge was back in 2001. We’re talking 15 years. Time holds back for nobody or nothing. In this particular case this bridge needs the rehabilitation to continue serving the community.

Unlike previous rehabilitation efforts on this bridge, the entire electrical system will be upgraded this time.
