Rio Grande Valley Runner Competing In Winter Olympics

Local News

German Madrazo lives in McAllen but is originally from Mexico.

He and his family have lived in the Rio Grande Valley for decades. He’s huge in the RGV running community and even owns a shoe and running supply store in McAllen.

Currently he is in Mexico on a photo shoot because he’ll leave for South Korea from Mexico City in the morning. German is one of only four athletes competing for Mexico in the Winter Olympics.

German will be the one carrying the Mexican flag into the stadium when the games open in PyeongChang on February 5.

Despite no snow in the RGV, German qualified in Cross Country Skiing. Training hard on a special apparatus he was already a remarkable runner and triathlete.

He’s not doing this not for himself but for a friend. She wanted to be an olympian, but died before attaining her dream.

Now years later, German took up the “torch”, and in a few days will carry her story and spirit into South Korea.

At age 43 he’s one of the oldest athletes in the the skying event. German said he sees that as an advantage.

He’s in the best shape of his life and perhaps much wiser than the rest.
