Rep. Cuellar Responds To National Emergency Declaration

Local News

Valley Congressmen Vicente Gonzalez, Filemon Vela, and Henry Cuellar all expressing concern over the president’s emergency declaration.

Representative Cuellar spoke to Local 23 today from Washington about what he, and many democrats believe is a commander in chief overstepping his boundaries.

“People need to realize that you just can’t get billions of dollars from thin air. He has to take it away from some needs and again as a member of appropriations we decide what those needs are, not the President. So, he’s going to come in and upset the balance of the needs we have for those communities. Whether it be military construction or some of the FEMA dollars.”

Cuellar adds the president would be taking the money to build the wall from victims of natural disasters like Hurricane Harvey in Texas.

He says his actions could weaken the U.S. military since some of the funds would have to be pulled from the armed forces.
