Real ID Act going into effect in October 2020

MCALLEN, Texas – It’s the busiest times of year for airline travel. If you’re planning on doing any flying next year, check your driver’s license.

As the holiday travel season gets underway officials are warning airline passengers about the Real ID Act which will be taking effect in 2020. The Real ID legislation was passed in 2005 by the U.S. Congress in response to the 9/11 attacks. This legislation allows for a more stringent identification process for the issuance of id’s used to verify identification by the federal government.

“The fact there is are still a lot of people in the State of Texas that don’t have a real id compliant license.” Said Mike Scott, Federal Security Director, TSA.

The State of Texas has been issuing Real ID compliant cards since October of 2016. If you have renewed you license or id since then you will see a gold star on the id which means you are in compliance. If you don’t have a gold star on you id you will need to visit the Texas DPS website to see what documents you will need to provide when renewing your id or driver’s license.

The law will fully take effect in October 2020. If you plan on flying or even enter a federal building you will need that gold star on your id.
