Prevention Coalitions Looking To Reduce Impaired Driving and Underage Drinking

Local News

Graduation season is underway for many school districts in the Valley.

Coalitions met to share and come up with strategies to stop underage drinking, and impaired driving.
Hidalgo County is ranked seventh in the state for the most cases of impaired driving. Coalition members say it is important for parents to talk with their children about the dangers and consequences of underage and impaired driving.

Elizabeth Urbina, Coalition specialist said, “I think it’s important to educate them. You’re not necessarily teaching them how to use this or that. It’s about educating them, because if you don’t talk to them about it, someone else is going to, and unfortunately, that somebody else is probably going to give them a different message than what you want them to have.”

Coalition members also want to remind parents that if you purchase alcohol for anyone underage, there will be consequences.

If you’re concerned about these issues, join up with a local coalition to make a difference. Visit to find a coalition near you.
