President Threatens Government Shutdown If Funds For Wall Not Met

Local News

President Trump would be willing to shut down the government if Congress doesn’t give him the money. It’s a promise he campaigned on, but Democrats want to hold him to the other half of his call for a wall.

News center 23’s Derick Garcia, tracking this story.

The other half of that promise is that Mexico would pay for it. While rallying for the wall, President Trump, made that point loud and clear. Since then, Mexico’s portion has fallen off. This is President Trump’s tweet from Sunday morning.

“I would be willing to “shut down” government if the Democrats do not give us the votes for Border Security, which includes the WAll! Must get rid of Lottery, Catch & Release etc. and finally go to system of Immigration based on MERIT! We need great people coming into our Country!”

But Democrats are pushing back, earlier today Senator Jeff Merkley tweeted,

“America: the President is admitting that Mexico isn’t paying for his wall. YOU ARE. He wants YOU to pay for the wall by raising YOUR TAXES. How do you feel about that?”

President Trump is demanding 25 billion dollars, if the funds go through, Congressman Henry Cuellar would likely be in his district.

“Why is the taxpayer paying 21 million dollars a mile when President Trump promised that Mexico was going to pay this? So why not leave a contingent on Mexico paying for this because we know the Mexicans are not going to do this in the first place but that was a promise that the president made. One, he wants a fence and a wall and two, Mexico was going to pay for it. But unfortunately he’s only pushing for the first half and leaving the taxpayers to pay for all of this.” Says Representative Cuellar.

Congress has until September 30th to vote, if not portions of the government may shut down.
