Great news out of the Brownsville Independent School District.
The Gladys Porter High School’s soccer team is number one in the state!
I went to their celebratory luncheon to share in their victory on Monday.
“we dreamed about this all along, i mean we promised ourselves we were going to work as hard as we could to reach this and now that we have it in our hands. It’s amazing,” says Uriel Sepulveda, Porter H.S soccer team captain.
Sepulveda and the rest of the porter high school team are celebrating their 28-0 undefeated games and their class 5A boys soccer title. This is the 6th state soccer title for the Rio Grande Valley since 2004.
“We’re very proud of them and it means a lot to BISD. This is a second year in a row that one of our teams brings home the state championship trophy so we’re extremely proud of that,” says BISD superintendent Dr. Esperanza Zendejas.
And it was no easy feat for these champs. At the final match Saturday against Frisco Wakeland the Cowboys found themselves at a tie with a 2 to 2 score and only about a minute left on the clock … prompting over time and penalty kicks.
“I mean my heart stopped for a moment too but, i mean, i never stopped believing we could win,” says Sepulveda.
“It’s very rare for a team to score ten penalty kicks in a row without missing, these boys did it. They scored ten penalty kicks, Frisco missed their 10th, and so we ended up winning the game with a score 10 to 9 in penalty kicks and I’m really proud of these boys,” says Head Coach Jose Espitia.
And what’s the key to victory according to head coach Jose Espitia? He says, Faith.
“Before games, before leaving to the game on the bus they would gather and do a prayer and they would always say ‘coach, we need to pray, we want to do a prayer and you know what, that’s what i believe carried them throughout the whole journey. It was a journey of faith,” says Espitia.
“And it created one heart, one team, one family, and this is where we stand right now because of god. God gave us so much faith in the team, it’s amazing it’s unbelievable,” says Sepulveda.
Congratulations Cowboys on your victory!.
