Port of Brownsville Annual Economic Activity Tops $3 Billion

Local News

It’s a snapshot of how important the Port of Brownsville has become to the Rio Grande Valley. More than 44,000 jobs and $3 billion in economic impact to the region from Brownsville to Edinburg. That’s according to a study commissioned by the port.

The study reports nearly 8,000 Rio Grande Valley workers are directly employed by activities of the port. Thousands more employed indirectly. Apart from salaries the Port of Brownsville created several billion in total state economic activity in 2015.

The report indicates that could be just the tip of the iceberg. In the next five years, industries from natural gas to car manufacturers are expected to increase business at the port.
